The Body of Evidence: Your February Digest

Promo - Check Out Our New Body 300

The Body of Evidence looks at common medical misconceptions and aims to untangle the twisted messages around health and medicine. You can check out the website at http://www.bodyofevidence.ca. It is brought to you by Jonathan Jarry and Dr. Christopher Labos.

We have been so busy, I decided to aim for a monthly digest for our Moutons No More page. So, what has The Body of Evidence accomplished in the last month?

We’re generating a lot of content that will be of interest to people looking for reliable information on health, science, and scientific thinking, so do subscribe to our website by going to http://www.bodyofevidence.ca and typing in your email address in the subscription box on the right.

We have been so busy, I decided to aim for a monthly digest for our Moutons No More page. So, what has The Body of Evidence accomplished in the last month?

  • An article in the Montreal Gazette about how, you know, health-wise? We’re doing pretty good as a nation, despite what fearmongers would have you believe;
  • A video on what science tells us constitutes a healthy lifestyle (a video which has received over 700 views so far and was even picked up by Canada’s Minister of Health!);
  • An article in Maclean’s about the safety of antidepressants in younger patients and the importance of open data;
  • A new episode of our podcast, in which we look at the evidence behind “female Viagra” and we talk to an editor of snopes.com on the quality of health reporting in the media;
  • Another article in Maclean’s (why not?) on the negative health effects of energy drinks;
  • A blog post on “Dr.” Sam Chachoua, Charlie Sheen’s rogue physician, who supposedly found the cure for HIV in the milk of arthritic goats (and it’s all a big conspiracy involving UCLA and attempts on his life).

Café Hitchens: The Syrian Refugee Crisis

Cafe Hitchens Logo 300

Moutons No More wants to welcome you to the second annual Café Hitchens.  Café Hitchens, much like Heinz ketchup, only comes out when it’s ready. But, when it does, it’s very tasty.

The topic to be covered this time around will be:

The Syrian Refugee Crisis, how its covered in the media, and what approach should be taken to settle millions of displaced people from a very different culture and why has Europe and North American seen a spike in the popularity of right wing groups?

Depending on the media you choose to read will obviously impact your understanding and ideological view of the crisis. For example, if you are an avid CBC listener you will believe it is only cute babies and young and old women suffering in this crisis and we need to bring as many to safety as possible. If you read the more right wing news you may see the crisis as  an epidemic of young military aged men sneaking into Europe and North America to conduct a holy war and we need to build a wall and keep them out. Anyone who actually follows the story knows the situation is much deeper then both of these views so we want to dive in and discuss for ourselves.

One thing that can surely be said is that this crisis has caused the rise of many right wing parties throughout Europe and even in the United States. We have seen the rise in popularity of Donald Trump after saying he would stop Muslim immigration into the United States. We have also seen right wing governments and groups gain popularity in Poland, The Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, the United Kingdom and France. (Countries that are directly dealing with the crisis) We want to discuss the reasons for the increase in popularity of these groups. Is it racism? Islamophobia? Frustration? are left wing governments ignoring their tax payers? or are there cultural differences that are just too large to bridge?

Please remember the rules we are here to discuss topics and ridicule ideas, not people. We will be doing the classic raise your hand schoolyard discussion. Everyone will have 2 minutes and 2 minutes ONLY to make their points without interruption.  If you so as interrupt more then 3 times you will be given a 20 minute no talking ban! In order to make this work, I have limited the discussion to a 15 attendee maximum so please RSVP soon before its too late!
