Nucleus (biology): an enclosed structure within a living cell which contains its genome.

This one comes to us from the Latin for “kernel”, itself derived from the root nuc- which means “nut”. The DNA found inside a nucleus is said to be “nuclear” DNA, which does not mean that it is radioactive….
